The Signs of CPTSD: Why So Many People Suffer Without Ever Knowing What's Wrong

Updated: Aug 10

If you have spent years feeling like something is fundamentally broken inside you — like you are too sensitive, too reactive, too needy, feeling ill or simply too much — and no one has ever been able to give you a satisfying explanation, this post is for you.
You may be living with Complex PTSD. And you may never have known it had a name. (You do not need to be diagnosed with this or have medication) You can heal yourself now and I can assure you of this!
What Is CPTSD and How Is It Different from PTSD?
Most people have heard of PTSD — Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is commonly associated with a single catastrophic event: a car accident, combat, a natural disaster.
Complex PTSD is different. It develops from prolonged, repeated trauma — often beginning in childhood — where escape felt impossible. I can help you process the trauma from both types.
CPTSD Includes:
- Childhood emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
- Neglect or emotional abandonment
- Growing up with a narcissistic, addicted, or mentally unwell parent
- Long term narcissistic abuse in adult relationships of any kind (love, work, friends, landlord) etc.
- Chronic illness, medical trauma, or prolonged instability
The trauma was not one moment. It was the atmosphere you lived in. It was insidious where it crept in and it was too late by the time you realized it….
The Signs That Are Easy to Miss
Because CPTSD develops slowly and shapes your entire sense of self, its symptoms often don't look like what people expect trauma to look like. Instead, they look like personality traits. Character flaws. Just the way you are….
They include:
- Difficulty regulating emotions — going from zero to overwhelmed very quickly, or feeling completely shut down and numb – isolating your self
- Deep, chronic shame — not guilt about something you did, but a pervasive feeling that you yourself are wrong or defective
- Feeling permanently different from other people, like you are watching life through glass
- Difficulty trusting anyone, even people who have given you no reason not to
- People pleasing, over-explaining, or shrinking yourself to manage other people's emotions
- A harsh, relentless inner critic that sounds nothing like your own voice
- Difficulty feeling safe in your own body
- Hypervigilance — always scanning for what might go wrong
- Collapse or freeze responses when stress reaches a certain threshold — not laziness, not weakness, but a nervous system that learned to shut down as a form of survival.
Why It So Often Goes Undiagnosed
CPTSD is still not formally listed as a separate diagnosis in the DSM — the manual most North American clinicians use. This means that many people with CPTSD are misdiagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder — and treated in ways that do not actually reach the root.
If you have tried medication or conventional talk therapy and felt like something was still missing, this may be why. You were not treatment resistant. You were simply not receiving the right treatment.
Your Symptoms Were Never Character Flaws
This is perhaps the most important thing I want you to understand. Every pattern you developed — the hypervigilance, the people pleasing, the emotional flooding, the shutdown — was intelligent. It was your nervous system doing exactly what it needed to do to keep you alive and functioning in an environment that was not safe.
Those adaptations saved you then. They are simply no longer serving you now. And that is what we work on together. I help you in a way that will not keep solidifying the same patterns that keep you stuck and feeling sick.
Healing CPTSD Is Possible
Not management. Not coping. Actual healing — at the nervous system level, at the identity level, at the level of how safe you feel simply existing in your own body. Also, it lasts a lifetime, once you process the trauma! It won’t come back.
Through a combination of somatic therapies, EMDR, Brain spotting, inner child work, and trauma-informed positive psychology, we work with your whole system — not just your thoughts, but your body, your patterns, and the earliest parts of your story that never got the attention they deserved.
You are not too far gone. You are not too complicated. You are someone who survived something genuinely hard, and you deserve support that meets the depth of that experience. I will show you exactly what works and I am here every step of the way, if you desire healing.
You have been carrying this long enough. Let's put it down together!

This teaches and explains so much! It’s crazy that people with CPTSD symptoms are given the wrong diagnoses and treatments all the time while these treatments are here to heal at root!
